Fort Elliott was a United States Army post in the state of Texas, operational between 1875 and 1890.
Fort Elliott was established in what was to become Wheeler County, Texas in December 1874 by Col. Nelson A. Miles as an advance supply post during the campaign to clear the Texas Panhandle of Indians after the Second Battle of Adobe Walls. In subsequent years, the fort served to protect the Panhandle's borders with Indian Territory, especially the cattle drives from Texas to Kansas.[1]
Among the troops serving there was the first black graduate of West Point Military Academy, Lt. Henry O. Flipper.
